The Firewood Menace:  Over 120 million Nigerians face serious health risks through exposure to smoke from cooking with firewood and other solid fuels.

The health risks associated with cooking with firewood and other solid fuels such as charcoal, sawdust and agricultural residues are numerous including pneumonia, cardiovascular diseases, chronic lung disease and lung cancer to mention a few.

There are also huge environmental consequence of cutting down trees for firewood. The local and global environment become degraded, as the demand for biomass encourages deforestation, the use of animal waste degrades soil quality and, to the extent that it is used unsustainably, burning biomass contributes to global warming. In Nigeria, 19 northern states are plagued with desertification due to consistent cutting down of trees for firewood.

The Gas Flaring Menace: There is a very sinister irony playing out in the country because as we destroy lives and the environment through the use of firewood for cooking, the solution to the problem in form of LPG is being wasted and flared away in the oil producing Niger Delta. Every month, Oil & Gas companies in the Delta flare over 39 billion Standard Cubic Feet (SCF) of gas; the equivalence of about $170.166 million (N34.884 billion).

  

Gas flaring is an environmental disaster, contributing immensely to climate change (80% of global warming), acid rain, loss of yield of agricultural produce, leukemia and other health related challenges. The economic loss is also mind boggling as we lose the opportunity for job creation and local industry development of the LPG sector. The act of gas flaring is a patent waste and the irony of it is at once sinister and unbelievable. It is an economic and environmental monstrosity that must be addressed, more so when it carries the potential to resolve the huge burden of drought and desertification plaguing the country.

The gas being wasted by flaring can be used for power (electricity generation), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), liquefied natural gas (LNG) and petrochemical feedstock.

40% of all gas produced in Nigeria is currently flared.

The Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, in its report on activities in the oil and gas sector for the month of August 2014, revealed that the oil and gas companies produced a total of 226.255 billion SCF of gas, utilised 187.85 billion SCF and flared 39.070 billion SCF.

Nigeria lost about 170.166 million USD, around 34.884 billion NGN to gas flaring in one month, as oil and gas companies flared 39.07 billion Standard Cubic Feet (SCF) of gas in the month of August 2014.

It is estimated that about $2.5 billion (500 billion Naira) in government revenues is lost annually through gas flaring and a further $7billion annually in lost opportunities which is a vast waste of economic potential. - (Anslem O. Ajugwo; Negative Effects of Gas Flaring: The Nigerian Experience)

Nigeria ranks one of the highest when it comes to number of gas flared with about 2.5 billion cubic feet of gas wasted daily.

The gas flared is four times the annual natural gas consumption of the UK.

The gas flared is the equivalent of 25% of the current power consumption of the African continent.

Flaring and Venting of Natural Gas release Carbon dioxide and Methane into the atmosphere, the two notorious gases responsible for 80% of global warming.

Flaring in Nigeria has contributed more emissions of greenhouse gases than all other sources in sub-Saharan Africa combined. The progressive desertification of Northern Nigeria can be indirectly linked to the environmental impact of flaring in the Niger Delta as the entire climatic system of the region is affected.

The LPG Situation

Domestic LPG is widely considered a very efficient and clean energy source for cooking but in Nigeria only about 5% of households use LPG as the source of domestic cooking as opposed to 56% using Firewood and 27% using Kerosene – two unsustainable energy sources.

                                                  

Sources of LPG in Nigeria include, the Marginal Fields, Refineries, NLNG installations, and operations of the IOCs. Most of these are for export purpose but domestic production from NLNG and the refineries.

Current Consumption

In 2013, the NLNG supplied 170,000MT of the LPG domestically, while in 2014 it rose by 17.65% to about 200,000MT. The total consumption for 2014 was 350,000MT meaning the NLNG supplied almost 60% of the domestic consumption.

The NLNG has maintained that it has the capacity to supply up to 1,000,000MT to the domestic market. The challenge lies in stimulating local demand and developing an effective mechanism to get the gas to the consumers.

Nigeria ranks the lowest in the per capita usage of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) below 2kg per capita consumption; lagging behind Ghana, South Africa, and Gabon. Morocco not reflected on the chart below, consumes 44kg per capita.

Projected Demand Capacity

The current LPG penetration in Nigeria stands at about 5%. The WLPGA estimates that over a five year period LPG adoption in Nigeria should grow to between 20 and 50% if the government helps to drive the adoption process with an annual consumption of 800,000MT–2,600,000MT. To achieve this level of demand a well-articulated plan needs to be developed and implemented.

The NLNG posits that the country does not have a production problem, with a reserve of about 187 trillion SCF of Natural gas and producing an average of 3 - 4 million MT of LPG per annum. The supply constraint is mainly one of infrastructure and logistics constraints to take the gas to the end users.

The absence of functional cylinder manufacturing plants, inadequate storage, poor transportation network and infrastructure, as well as limited jetty availability and low-priority berthing accorded to Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) vessels constitute the major challenges facing the industry.
